How to tailor a résumé to a job without lying

Tailoring is supposed to surface the true overlap between you and a role, not invent one. Here is an honest method, and where AI helps without crossing the line.

Tailoring has a bad reputation because a lot of tools treat it as keyword stuffing: paste a job description, let a model spray its terms across your résumé, and hope a human never notices. That is not tailoring. It is a lie with good formatting, and it falls apart in the first interview.

What honest tailoring is

Honest tailoring is re-ordering and re-phrasing what is already true so the most relevant parts of you are read first. The facts do not change. The emphasis does.

  • Find the real overlap between your experience and the role.
  • Lead with it: move the most relevant project or bullet to the top.
  • Use the employer's own words for things you have genuinely done.
  • Leave gaps as gaps. A missing skill is information, not a flaw to paper over.

A simple pass you can do by hand

Read the job post twice. The first time, underline every concrete skill, tool and responsibility. The second time, mark which ones you can defend with a real example. That marked list is your tailoring brief. Everything on it should be easy to find near the top of your résumé. Everything not on it is noise for this application.

Where AI belongs, and where it does not

A model is good at noticing overlap you skim past and at tightening a sentence you have read too many times. It is dangerous the moment it adds a number, a tool or an achievement you never mentioned. The rule is one line: it may rephrase what you wrote; it may not invent what you did not.

lapel is built around that rule. It shows the honest keyword overlap, flags skills the job wants that you have not listed as "add only if true", and never inserts them for you. Every suggestion arrives as a diff you accept or reject. Nothing changes on your page until you say so, because the only résumé worth sending is one you can stand behind out loud.
